The Sunshine Blogger Award!

Good news! I was nominated by afterbutterflyrain – thank you! – for the Sunshine Blogger Award!

Note: The theme song for this post is obviously Walking on Sunshine. 🙂

The Rules:

Thank the person who nominated you.

Answer 11 questions set by the person who nominated you.

Nominate 11 bloggers to receive the award and write them 11 new questions to answer.

1.What genre do you want to read more of?

Science Fiction.

2.What’s the worst book you’ve ever read?

I don’t have one. Obviously there are books that I don’t like, but I don’t have one that I could say I  hate more than all other books I have read. I try to take something positive from every book I read, even the ones I don’t like or fail to finish.

3.What’s your favourite childhood book?

Favourite children’s book: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Favourite book from my childhood: The Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett.

4.What movie adaptation did you think was better than the book (if any)?

Honestly, I can’t think of one. Sometimes I like the movie and the book equally and for different reasons – an example being Howl’s Moving Castle – but I can’t think of one where I’ve liked the movie better than the book.

5.Do you prefer reading in the morning or in the evening?

Like any self respecting Night Owl, I do all my best work at night – including reading.

6.What’s your favourite quote from a book?

I can’t pick just one!!!!!

But I do really love this one from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland…

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?’
‘That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,’ said the Cat.
‘I don’t much care where -‘ said Alice.
‘Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,’ said the Cat.
‘- so long as I get SOMEWHERE,’ Alice added as an explanation.
‘Oh, you’re sure to do that,’ said the Cat, ‘if you only walk long enough.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland

7.Are a part of any book clubs?

Unfortunately no. I’d like to be though, it sounds like a fun thing to do and an excuse to eat cake/drink tea.

8.What’s your favourite blog post that you’ve posted?

Probably my Bookish Time Travel Tag. If you’re reading this and want to try it, consider yourself tagged.

Untitled drawing (5)

9.What are your favourite websites?

Buzzfeed and Pinterest – great ways to waste time and learn new things. I also love Etsy and Redbubble for online shopping, but I hardly ever actually buy all that much stuff from either because I’m usually skint. Sigh. Fun to browse on though.

10.What other hobbies do you enjoy doing, apart from reading?

BAKING! Usually I stick to making cakes, especially one’s with chocolate in the recipe. Not biscuits – I try, repeatedly, and all I end up with is small piles of gooey disasters or pebble like circles I could use to commit murder.

I also love writing, although I think I’m terrible at it, and photography, which I think I’m okay-ish at.

And blogging? Does that count?

11.Do you have a goodreads reading challenge for this year, if so what is it?

I’ve done a Goodreads challenge each year from 2012 – my usual goal is 50, but this year I decided to push myself a little and aim for 55. Also, it’s a leap year so I figured I’d put that extra day to use and spend it reading a book. I’m doing well so far – I’ve read a total of 33 books!

Liebster Award #2

Guess what? After I posted my first Liebster Award yesterday (I was nominated by The Whimsical Chick earlier this week), I found out that I have been nominated again by Laura @ Reading Lust! Thank you so much! 🙂

Go check out both their blogs, they’re really good!

The Rules

1. Thank the blogger who nominated you.

2. Answer the 11 questions the blogger gives you.

3. Nominate 11 bloggers that you think are deserving of the award.

4. Let the bloggers know you nominated them.

5. Give them 11 questions of your own.

1.If you could read only one book for the rest of your life, which one would it be?

Ugh. Such a tough question! Can I cheat and chose a series? I’m going to anyway – Harry Potter.

2.Which character would you like to slap in the face?

Just one? Probably Tamlin after reading A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas.

WP_20160605_13_39_05_Rich (2) 1

3.If you could change an ending of one book, which one would it be, and what would you change?

Honestly, I can’t think of one. Occasionally I get annoyed about some stuff, but usually I can see why the author did it.

4.If you could make one series of a book into a standalone, which series would you choose?

Ashes trilogy by Ilsa J. Bick. I loved the first one, thought the second one was okay, and didn’t even finish the third book. It would have been way better if it had been left on a cliffhanger after book 1 or condensed into a duology. For anyone who’s interested, it’s about a zombie apocalypse.

5.Which Film/TV Show/Musical have you watched the most times?

I don’t know. I’ve seen Tangled quite a lot, as well as Little Miss Sunshine and Pan’s Labyrinth? And I’m not really into musicals *hides*.

6.Your favourite book OTP?

This usually changes with every book I read, but I really loved reading about Levi and Cath from Fangirl, so I’ll pick them.

7.Which fictional team/gang/group of friends would you like to be a part of?

The Raven Boys from Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle series. I want to go find dead Welsh Kings!

8.Who is your favourite secondary character in a book?

Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter. Watch out for the nargles!

What is your favourite city that you have visited?

I’ve not actually visited that many cities, so my options are limited. Hopefully when I’m older I can go travelling like I want to and rectify this tragedy. For now, I’m going to say Edinburgh.

10.If you could have a superpower, which one would you choose?

The ability to speak any language fluently.

11.What is the most shameful book that you have read and loved it?

I don’t really have book shame for the ones I like. I do sometimes feel a little embarrassed when I dislike a book that everyone else seems to love though.

So because I just done my first Liebster Award yesterday, I’m going to use the same questions for my nominations this time round as well. How lazy, I know.

Questions for my nominees:

  1. What is one of your favourite quotes from a book?
  2. Favourite animal/creature from a book? (e.g. hippogriffs from Harry Potter)
  3. Do you prefer to read at night or in the morning?
  4. What three adjectives/traits would you use to describe yourself?
  5. What’s your bookish pet peeve?
  6. You can only read one genre of book for the rest of your life: which genre would it be?
  7. Is there a book/series that you really liked but that had an ending you hated?
  8. What’s your Hogwarts house?
  9. Do you have a favourite film or T.V. show?
  10. What’s your favourite part of blogging?
  11. Who is your favourite book villain?

I Nominate:

Monkey Bibliophile

Literary Dust

Liebster Award!

Great news! I was nominated by The Whimsical Chick for a Liebster Award! Thank you!

Here are the rules:

  1. Post the award on your blog.
  2. Acknowledge the blogger who nominated you.
  3. Answer the questions assigned to you.
  4. Give 10 random facts about yourself.
  5. Nominate 10 deserving bloggers for the award.
  6. Ask 10 questions to your nominees.

So onward to the questions…

1.What was your favourite childhood book?

Childhood me wasn’t always that much of a bookworm. I know, how horrible. But my mum used to read to me and sister quite a lot when we were little, and one of the books she read was Terry Pratchett’s The Wee Free Men.  Fast forward to when I was ten/eleven years old and beginning to really enjoy reading. I found a copy of The Wee Free Men in an old box of stuff when we moved house and read it again – I loved it. I think it’s partly the reason my favourite genre is fantasy.

2.What is one instance where you liked a movie better than the book it was based off of?

The Hunger Games. I liked the books quite a bit, but I enjoyed watching the films more.

3.What is one instance where you liked the book better than the movie?

Basically most book to movie adaptations? For some reason Stardust came to mind – I prefer the book to the film.

4.Who is your role model?

I don’t really have one…? There’s people I admire quite a lot, but I’ve never just had one person I want to be like. I think it’s better to find inspiration from a mix of people and focus on using this to make a better, more well-rounded version of yourself. It’s kind of like being a patchwork quilt.

5.If you could go back in time, what era would you go to? Would you change anything?

I already kind of answered this question when I done my Bookish Time Travel Tag – I’d visit the Victorian era because I find it fascinating. And they have top hats. I wouldn’t change anything, because messing around with time just seems way too risky. I’d probably start the apocalypse by accident or something.

6.What is the most time you have re-read a book?

I’ve re-read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland over ten times by now…

7.What is your favourite food to snack on while reading?

I don’t normally snack and read – when you’re as clumsy as I am, that’s living a little too dangerously. However, I’ve found that popcorn is a pretty safe snack not only for watching films but reading too. I always get sweet and salty mix. Best of both that way.

8.Who would you dress as for a literary costume party?

Good question. I’d go as the Mad Hatter probably – that way I can wear a quirky top hat!

9.If you could recommend one book to everybody reading this, what would it be?

The Collected Works of A J Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. This book isn’t perfect – it can be a little sappy at times, at others a little simple. But it’s one of my favourites. It’s a book about bookish people. It’s wonderful and heart-warming.

10.What is your favourite food?

Chocolate cheesecake and fresh strawberries, with a little bit of cream. YUM!

So those were my answers. Now I’m supposed to give you ten facts about my wonderful self, but I’m going to cheat instead and leave a link to my Top Ten Tuesday post Facts About Me. 🙂

Now for the nominations! *insert drum roll*

Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag!

Hey guys! So I was tagged by the delightful icebreaker694 to do the Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag, which freaks me out itself because where is this year going? Icebreaker694’s blog exists here and you should go check it out, it’s really good. 🙂

Best Book You’ve Read Yet in 2016:

Just one? Well, I recently did a post about my Favourite Books of 2016 So Far, but I guess that if I absolutely had to pick one…. Nope. Still stuck. I’m just going to make this jointly between The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte.

Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2016:

Lair of Dreams by Libba Bray. This was well worth the long wait and even better than it’s predecessor, The Diviners. Can’t wait to see where this series goes next. For those of you who are interested, it’s a paranormal/historical set in 1920s New York.

New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To:

A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab. I loved the first book and I keep seeing really positive reviews about the sequel, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Can’t wait!

Most Anticipated Release fro the Second Half of the Year:

Biggest Disappointment of 2016 So Far:

Emma by Jane Austen. Sorry Austen fans, but I shall hang my head in shame. I just wasn’t feeling it. It’s not put me off though – I’m going to leave it a while but I definitely want to get around to reading another of Austen’s works.

Biggest Surprise:

The Chimes by Anna Smaill. Honestly, this was an impulse buy based on an interesting synopsis and lovely cover. No regrets! Quirkiest dystopian I’ve ever read.

WP_20160509_10_09_57_Rich (2)

Favourite New Author:

Virginia Woolf. Who technically isn’t new – quite the opposite in fact – but who was new to me this year. I’m definitely going to read more of her work.

Newest Fictional Crush:

So I finally got around to reading Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo this year. I read Smoke and Bone a long time ago and whilst I didn’t dislike it I wasn’t exactly wowed either, so I thought I wouldn’t continue with the series. Then Six of Crows happened. One of my favourite premises for a book is: fantasy thieves. Honestly, write that on a book and I’ll buy it. Which is what happened with Six of Crows, which is now sitting on my favourites shelf because it is that brilliant.17415685-_uy200_

So after reading Six of Crows I thought I’d give the Grisha trilogy another go, picking up Siege and Storm. It’s still not amazing, but not bad either – I liked it more than book one. But you know what I loved about it? (*insert dreamy sigh*) Nikolai Lantsov. He gets all the best quotes in this book:

“When people say impossible, they usually mean improbable.”

“Anything worth doing starts as a bad idea.”

Newest Favourite Character:

Ling Chan from Lair of Dreams. Such a bad-ass. Such a genius. Such a lovable character.

Book That Made You Cry:

Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys. To be honest every time I read a book by this genius I end up sobbing at one point. Also, a perfect excuse to use my favourite gif!

Favourite Book to Film Adaptation:

Room. This film hit me with the feels, I was crying. Again.

Favourite Post I’ve Done This Year:

The Bookish Time Travel Tag. My first Tag! If you want to take part, feel free!

Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year:

The Muse by Jessie Burton, literally three days ago. I got the hardcover. It’s stunning. The pages are red. I think this is what love feels like.

WP_20160712_15_08_12_Rich (2)

What Book Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year:

Besides all of them…? Probably Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. It’s been on my TBR shelf for ages and I know I’m probably going to really love it, but I keep putting it off. It’s on this month’s TBR though, so hopefully.
